Change Your Oil
Students will define saturated fat, unsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, and trans fat. They will understand the differences between the types of fat and learn to make healthy choices regarding fats and oils.

Lesson Progression
Primary Message: Not all fats are bad; choosing oils instead of solid fats is one way to incorporate healthier fats into your diet.
Secondary Message: Fish and nuts are other good sources of oils.
After watching Healthy Hannah’s Healthy Choice Heroes repeat the question asked by Healthy Hannah: Do you need to change your oil? What are your favorite kinds of fish? How about your favorite nuts?
Objective 1: Define the following vocabulary words: Saturated fat, Unsaturated fat, Polyunsaturated fat, Monounsaturated fat, and Trans fat
Objective 2: Understand the difference between the different types of fat.
Activity: Researching Fats and Oils. The teacher can give direct instruction using the Fats and Oils handout, explaining to the class the difference between fats and oils. Then students can visit ChooseMyPlate.gov to further research all about oils.
Objective 3: Make healthy choices regarding fats and oils.
Activity: Healthy Choices: Fats vs. Oils Google form: Students complete the form/quiz. After going over the answers, have the students brainstorm healthy meals/snacks using healthy fats.
