Fort Frederick Timeline
In this lesson, students will explore the rich history of Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve by examining a documentary film, creating a visual timeline of key events, and reflecting on the significance of the preserve.

- Timeline Worksheet
- Pencil, colored pencils, markers, or crayons
- Blank paper (colored paper or butcher block paper for timeline strip) Scissors
- Glue

Lesson
- Give a brief history of Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve. Reference background information linked in the resources tab.
- Show the Fort Frederick History documentary film (linked in the resources section).
- Review key historical events that took place on and/or near the Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve.
- Pass out Timeline Worksheet (linked in the resources tab)
- Optional. A blank timeline sheet is provided to add more historical events to the timeline (i.e., American Revolution, Civil War, Civil Rights Movement).
- Have students cut out the blocks with arrows from the Timeline Worksheet.
- Pass out blank piece of paper (colored paper or butcher block) to students.
- Working individually or in groups to complete their timelines, students will draw a line through the middle of the blank timeline paper.
- Students will arrange their block and arrow timeline pieces in order below the timeline line.
- Students will write the year associated with each event above the timeline line.
- Students will glue their block and arrow timeline pieces in order under the appropriate dates.
- Have students illustrate key events on their timelines.
- Optional: students can supplement their timelines with a writing exercise concerning one or more historical events that took place at Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve.
Teacher Notes
Differentiation: Provide students with a timeline worksheet that includes visuals and key vocabulary terms related to Fort Frederick's history. OR Provide students with a pre-populated timeline that includes major events and pictures. They can focus on arranging the events in chronological order and coloring the pictures.
Extension: Instruct students to research an event from the timeline in more depth and present their findings to the class. Encourage them to use the documentary or other resources to support their presentation.
Fort Frederick History
Nearly three centuries ago, the colonial government in Port Royal conceded to the settler's demands for a new fort for protection from a Spanish incursion. Although its original mission was short-lived, in 1863 Fort Frederick stood at the epicenter of one of the most important events in U.S. history.
