Civil Rights Spotlight: Dr. Lonnie Randolph

In recognition of July's Honoree for the 2024 South Carolina African American History Calendar,Dr. Lonnie Randolph, students will discover the contributions and impact he made to the Civil Rights Movement and how they they can advocate for Civil Rights in their future career.

Lesson Progression

Introduction

Have the following prompt posted as students enter the classroom:

  • What is an optometrist? How would an optometrist advocate for Civil Rights?

Once all students are in their seats and have responded to the prompt, have students share their thoughts with the class. Afterwards, explain to students that this activity is inspired by the July Honoree of the South Carolina African America History Calendar, Dr. Lonnie Randolph, an Optometrist and Civil Rights leader in South Carolina.

Spotlight Graphic Organizer

Have students watch the July Honoree of the South Carolina African American History Calendar video. As they watch, have students fill out the Spotlight Graphic Organizer.

Students will record information on the following topics:

  • Background: Where is Dr. Lonnie Randolph from? What events led him to pursue a career in Civil Rights?
  • Education: Where did Dr. Randolph attend school? Which degree(s) did he receive?
  • Accomplishments: What honors and accomplishments has Dr. Randolph received? 
  • Impact: What impact has Dr. Randolph made in his community as a Civil Rights leader?

Students may research additional Information if they cannot answer questions from the video or calendar excerpt.

Advocating for Civil Rights

Have students answer the following prompt using the graphic organizer.

  • What career are you interested in? How would you advocate for Civil Rights in that career?

Allow students to share their responses with a partner or with the class.

Conclusion

Have students share out or complete an exit slip on what they learned about Dr. Lonnie Randolph and the impact he made in the Civil Rights Movement.
