A Celebration of the Arts with Mac Arthur Goodwin
In celebration of the September nominee of the 2024 SC African American History Calendar, students will learn about the life, contributions, and impact of Mac Arthur Goodwin. Students will also discuss the importance of the Arts in education.

Lesson Progression
- Call students to the carpet. Tell students that we are going to begin the lesson by talking about "the arts" and why the arts are important.
- See if students can identify and share examples of what we mean when we say the Arts? Remind students that the arts is a wide open field that encompasses many areas. (It might be a good idea to have some pictures on hand of different examples to aid students if they need the support.)
- Create a web or chart of some examples together for students to be able to refer back to. (Ex: drama, dance, art, music, painting, drawing, singing, photography, etc.)
- Inform students that Arts in Education is important because it gives us a way to express ourselves, it sparks creativity, and it helps us appreciate the beauty around. us. Furthermore, it teaches us life skills such as patience, flexibility, problem solving, and creativity which benefits us throughout our life.
- Next, share a picture of the September 2024 nominee of the South Carolina African American History Calendar, Mac Arthur Goodwin. Inform students that Mr. Goodwin is being celebrated for his commitment to arts education in our state. In fact, he received the Order of the Palmetto.
- The Order of the Palmetto is the highest civilian honor awarded by the governor. It is awarded to South Carolinians who demonstrate extraordinary lifetime achievement, service, and make significant national and state contributions.
- Discuss what kind of person students believe Mac Arthur Goodwin must have been in order to receive this kind of honor. (This is a great way to review adjectives as well-students might use words like honest, dependable, smart, caring, hardworking, compassionate, etc.) Guide students towards adjectives as needed.
- Inform students that in addition to receiving the Order of the Palmetto, an award was established in 2002 in his honor, The Mac Arthur Goodwin Award, to celebrate an individual who demonstrates significant commitment to Arts Education.
- Afterwards, play Youtube video on Mac Arthur Goodwin. Students should listen to identify additional facts about his life and his contributions to our state and the future of Arts Education.
- Once the video is complete, review some of the information that was learned particularly how Mac Arthur Goodwin influenced Arts Education in South Carolina.
- Following this discussion, the teacher will share the biography circles. Students will fill in their circles with facts about Mac Arthur Goodwin. The teacher may choose to share a chart that has facts listed on them. Students will only choose the facts that pertain to Mac Arthur Goodwin and fill them in on their biography circle. The teacher may decide to let students come up with the facts on their own based on what they learned from the video and discussions.
Teacher Notes
The teacher should make modifications and adjustments to the lesson plan and assessment as needed to meet the needs of students. Students may choose to complete the assignment digitally instead of on paper.
