Celebrating a True Leader: Lieutenant General Arthur J. Gregg
Students will learn more about Lt. General Arthur J. Gregg, the August nominee of the 2024 South Carolina African American History calendar.

Lesson Progression
- Have these words or similar words posted around the classroom: principal, head, master, president, captain, chief, head,etc. prior to students entering the classroom.
- As students enter the room, allow ample time to do a gallery walk. Students walk around the room reading each word that is displayed. Students should try to identify what each of these words have in common.
- After everyone has had enough time to walk the room, ask students to share what they think each of these words have in common or how they are similar. (leader-someone in charge-controlller, etc.)
- Discuss qualities that students believe make a good leader. Create a chart of these adjectives for the class to be able to refer back to later.
- Afterwards, introduce and share a photograph of Lieutenant General Arthur J. Gregg. Inform students that Lt. Gregg is not only a great example of what it means to be a great leader, but he also had a tremendous impact on the army's history
- Then share his excerpt from the 2024 SC African American History calendar along with the video that highlights his life.
- As the video plays, students should note the following: Some additional articles are located in Resources to aid in students answering these questions if necessary.
- What is his background?
- Name some of Lt. Gregg's accomplishments.
- What is the highest honor he has received?
- What is he best known for?
- What impact did he have on his community?
- What makes Lieutenant Gregg a great leader?
- Any other interesting facts
- Students can choose how they want to organize the information they learned using one of the templates provided.
- Once everyone has had ample time to answer their questions and organize their information, students will have an opportunity to share what they've learned with the class.

Feel free to make adjustments and/or modify lesson as needed to meet the needs of individual learners. Students who need additional support can work in pairs. Students who have mastered the concepts may work ahead or choose to design a presentation on their own.
