Interior of the Mather School | History of SC Slide Collection

The interior of the Mather School auditorium around 1940. Mather School was founded in 1868 in Beaufort by Mrs. Rachel Crane Mather of Boston, and was operated after 1882 by the Women's Baptist Home Missionary Society. In the 1930s, its curriculum ranged from the fifth grade through two years of college. It served the educational needs of African-American girls in the Lowcountry for nearly a century.
