Conductor Speaks "The Elephant" | Carnival of the Animals

In this video, conductor Morihiko Nakahara discusses Camille Saint-Saëns’s movement “The Elephant.” This movement continues Saint-Saëns’s tradition of unexpected musical choices, featuring the double bass to illustrate the elephant’s heavy, lumbering movements. Saint-Saëns uses low-pitched instruments to represent large animals and cleverly incorporates musical quotations from Mendelssohn and Berlioz. The video concludes with the South Carolina Philharmonic performing “The Elephant” from The Carnival of the Animals.
