Lesson Overview
In this interdisciplinary lesson, students connect music and creative writing by listening to selections from The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns and translating the tone, tempo, and mood of a specific movement into an original written piece. Students may write either a narrative from the perspective of the featured animal or a structured poem that reflects the musical character of the composition. Through guided listening, discussion, and research, students analyze how composers communicate mood and imagery through musical elements and then mirror those qualities through descriptive language, sensory details, and rhythm in their writing. The lesson culminates in student presentations where their written work is performed while the corresponding musical movement plays, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding of how music and language can work together to convey imagery and emotion.
