Lesson Overview
In this interdisciplinary lesson, students explore the connection between music, animal behavior, environmental science, and the arts using The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. Students analyze how musical elements depict animals and use movement to physically represent these behaviors. Working in groups, they research an endangered animal, construct a model habitat or mural, and write an expository essay highlighting the animal’s characteristics, environmental challenges, and potential conservation solutions. The unit culminates in group presentations where students share their habitats, perform movement representations, and discuss strategies to protect species. This lesson integrates music, science, visual arts, and writing to develop critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem-solving skills while deepening understanding of animal behavior and environmental stewardship.
