Students will be given a case summary to read on Brown vs. Board of Education Topeka (1954) court case. Brown vs. Board of Education Cases Summary. Students will read through the summary and analyze both the argument for and against the supreme court ruling for Brown vs. Board. Students will use this time to define the key vocabulary words as well and find the main theme in the case summary of Brown vs. Board.

The teacher will then facilitate a 4 corners activity where students will write on posters in the room arguments supporting or against the Brown vs. Board decision.

Students will engage in a teacher-led classroom discussion about Brown vs. Board, the impact of desegregation of schools, and the impact of Jim Crow and the idea of separate but equal in American society. 

Day 2 

15 mins

Students will review the previous day's notes and discussion at the beginning of class. Students will then view the Brown vs. Board How the Case Moved Through the Court System Visual.

30 mins 

Students will look at the interactive website on KnowitAll.org on Booker T. Washington High School and Benson Elementary School the students will then be able to work independently to look at the video explaining Booker T. Washington High School’s history and the process of community development and gentrification that ensued in the city of Columbia, S.C. in their attempts to stop integration in public schools in the city of Columbia.

Phase 1 Students will watch the video about the history of Booker T. Washington High School Independently

Phase 2 Students will look at the interactive 3D virtual tour of Booker T. Washington High School and Florence Benson Elementary 

15 mins

Students will complete the lesson with a 15 minute essay on the impact of Brown vs. Board of Education on students in public schools and on schools in South Carolina and peer review with other students to foster collaboration and analysis of documents and the interactive website detailing Booker T. Washington High School.

Day 1- Students will engage in a teacher-led classroom discussion about Brown vs. Board, the impact of desegregation of schools, and the impact of Jim Crow and the idea of separate but equal in American society. 

Day 2 -Students will complete the lesson with a 15 minute essay on the impact of Brown vs. Board of Education on students in public schools and on schools in South Carolina and peer review with other students to foster collaboration and analysis of documents and the interactive website detailing Booker T. Washington High School and Florence Benson Elementary.
