Twin Staircases | The SC State House

Original twin cast-iron grand staircases on each side of the lower lobby lead to the main lobby and to the entrances to the South Carolina House and Senate chambers. Interesting non-architectural features include the wall coverings and jessamine border on the twin staircase.

Wall Covering: The fabric of the wall covering on the twin staircases is embossed with the letters “S” and “C”for South Carolina. The design on the fabric was taken from the design used on the old dispensary, or liquor, bottles from the South Carolina State Dispensary in the early 1900s.

Jessamine Border: The staircases are accented with a border of yellow jessamine, the state flower of South Carolina.
