  • Leaves entirely green, in pairs along four-sided twigs and branchlets
  • Dominant on rock outcrops
  • Heartwood reddish
  • Bark dry, not ridged
  • Height 40 - 50 feet
  • Very sturdy frame
  • Grows in shallow soil
  • Root system cannot withstand continuous heavy winds
  • Heartwood is used for cedar chests, cabinets, lead pencils and fence posts
  • Habitats include old fields and dry soils
