Lesson Progression

  1. Explain that today’s lesson will be about animals and needs that they have.
  2. Have students share needs they think animals have.
  3. Share the KidsECON video 4: Animal Shelter with the class.
  4. Discuss what an animal shelter is and how there are my types of animals.
  5. Review the original list of needs and add any new discoveries from the video.
  6. Discuss what a mammal is and make a list of mammals and other animals.
    1. Mammals: dogs, cats, rabbit
    2. Not mammals: birds, fish
  7. Review what a GOOD and SERVICE are.
    1. Goods: things that people make or grow to sell to make money. Goods can include food, clothes, or even toys.
    2. Service: Jobs that people do for others.
  8. Discuss how Goods and Services can be shown at an animal shelter.
    1. Animals need lots of care. Animals must be fed food, this is known as a good. Goods cost money.
    2. Sometimes animals can get sick or they might be hurt and have to see a doctor or a veterinarian helps them. This is a service. Services also cost money.
    3. Animal shelters are supported by people in the community who volunteer their time and some people give money to help animal shelters.
