KidsECON Episode 3: Restaurant Lesson
This lesson will explore how goods and services meet needs and wants. By learning about goods and services in the school, community and South Carolina, students will identify goods as items for purchase and services as actions that benefit others.

Lesson Progression
Day 1:
- Discuss the difference between goods and services.
- Have students think about goods and services they use as individuals.
- Explain that goods are things of value that people buy or donate that they can hold or touch and services are things you pay people to do. Services can also be donated, this is called being a volunteer.

- Create an anchor chart as a class of goods and services.
- Goods:
- Examples of Goods in their home: food, toys, computer, clothing
- Examples of Goods in school: food, books, desks, pencils, computer
- Examples of Goods in the community: fruit and vegetables, cars, clothes, furniture
- Services:
- Examples of Services in their home: take out trash, walk the dog, set the table
- Examples of Services in school: safety patrol, PTA volunteer
- Examples of Services in the community: police department, fire department, trash collector

Day 2:
Review what Goods and Services are and discuss that today you talk about Goods and Services in the Community.
Goods and Services in the Community
Have students think of a place they enjoy going with their family. Have them draw a picture and write a sentence about why that place is important to them and how it provides a good, service or both.
Day 3:
Goods and Services in the State:
Discuss that there are many goods and services provided by the state of South Carolina. You can add notes to a map of SC to show where things are within the state.
Agriculture: livestock and livestock products. Crops such as cotton, corn, plalnts, soybeans and tobacco.
Fruits and Vegetables: Peaches are a main fruit crop in SC. Beans, cucumbers, pecans, squash, watermelon.
Manufactured Goods:
Chemicals: synthetic fibers, plastic resin, dyes, pharmaceuticals
Textiles: cloth made from cotton, yarn
Forest Products: wood and paper
Mining Goods: granite, limestone and gold
Fishing: clams, crabs, oysters, shrimp, snapper
Automobiles
Community businesses and personal services benefit the state’s tourism industry. Examples are health care, engineering firms, hotels and repair shops.
Government services include public schools and hospitals and military bases.
How do Goods and Services change over time?
Discuss that things change over time-clothes, music, etc.
Discuss how our own needs and wants change over time.
Discuss how advances in technology have helped goods and services change over time. (Grocery delivery services, Uber, etc)
Discuss how Goods and Services have changed over time (suggestion to create a T-chart with how things have changed).
