Sir George Carteret | History of SC Slide Collection

Sir George Carteret ( -1680) was one of the original eight Proprietors of the Carolinas. An advocate of the Stuart monarchs during the English Civil War of 1640-1660, he governed the Isle of Jersey as the representative of Charles II, imprisoning supporters of Parliament there, until forced to surrender in 1651. An able seaman, he was made a member of the Privy Council when Charles II was restored to the throne (see King Charles II), and became treasurer of the navy from 1661-1667. It was from this base of power that he petitioned for land in the Carolinas with the other proprietors and received the Charter in 1663.
