• Gregarious bird
• Scarlet markings often concealed with only yellow margin visible
• Immature male sooty brown and mottled with red shoulders
• Brown female and juvenile identified by sharp-pointed bill
• Well-defined dark striping on breast
• Travels and roosts in large flocks
• Habitats include marshes, swamps, stream banks, hayfields and farmland
