• Dark, heavy-bodied water snake
• 50.8 - 189.2 cm (20 - 74.5 inches) long
• Broad-based flat-topped head
• Olive, brown or black above
• No pattern or with dark crossbands
• Young strongly patterned with yellow tipped tails
• Females give live birth in August - September every other year
• Bite can be fatal and far worse than Copperhead snake
• When threatened exposes light "cotton" lining of its mouth
• Nocturnal
• Preys on frogs, fish, snakes, and birds
• Habitats include lowland swamps, lakes, rivers, canals, and rice fields
