Sharks and Minnows: Basketball
Objectives: TSWBT use the correct technique for dribbling a basketball while avoiding the “sharks” in a small-sided game during the class
Equipment:
- Basketballs
- Gym space
How to play: Students will be separated into two separate groups (sharks and minnows). One group will be the sharks and will be spread out around the gym. The goal of the sharks is to knock the basketball away from the student dribbling. The shark will be in a criss-cross apple sauce position with a basketball in its lap. They can move around anyway that they would like as long as the basketball stays in their laps. The other group of students will be the minnows. The minnows will start at a baseline on the court and will be attempting to dribble the basketball across the gym to the other baseline without allowing a shark to touch or steal their basketball from them. If a shark touches their basketball, they will then become a shark. Once all the minnows reach the other baseline, they will wait on the teacher's whistle to start dribbling to the other baseline. The last minnow that survives is the winner.
Rules:
- Minnows cannot pick up their dribble. They must dribble continuously until they reach the other baseline.
- Minnows must stay within the playing area
- Sharks must keep their basketball in their lap. (no running or walking)
Alternatives:
- Allow sharks to stand up and walk/run
- Give sharks a hula hoop where they can stand but have to keep at least one foot in the hoop. No dragging the hoop
