Basketball Stations
Equipment:
- Poly spots
- Cones
- Basketballs
- At least two basketball goals
Objectives:
Psychomotor: TSWBT use the correct technique while performing chest passes, bounce passes, free throws, shooting, layups, and dribbling in stations during class
Cognitive: TSWBT correctly identify cues for passing, dribbling, and shooting to a partner by the end of class
Affective: TSWBT work together with partners and a group while performing different basketball skills throughout class.
Station 1: Chest pass
Cues: Ball to chest, step, push, follow through by extending arms and thumbs facing down.
Task: Students will be with a partner standing on poly spots across from each other. One student will start with the basketball. Students will begin practicing chest passes by passing the ball back and forth with their partner aiming the ball towards their partners chest. Students will continue practicing the chest pass until it is time to rotate stations.
Station 2: Bounce Pass
Cues: Ball to chest, step, push, follow through by extending arms and thumbs facing down.
Task: Students will be with a partner standing on poly spots across from each other. One student will start with the basketball. Students will begin practicing bounce passes by passing the ball back and forth with their partner aiming the ball at the ground about 2/3 of the way to their partners. Students will continue practicing the bounce pass until it is time to rotate stations.
Station 3: Free Throws
Cues: Eyes on basket, bend knees, jump, extend elbow, follow through by flicking wrist
Task: Students will have their own basketballs for this station and will be working as a group. The students will be in a single file line behind the free throw line. The student at the front of the line will begin by shooting a free throw and retrieving the rebound. Once that student is out of the way the next student in line may shoot their free throw and so on. Students will continue practicing their free throws until it is time to rotate stations.
Station 4: Layups
Cues: Dribble to within 3 feet of basket, extend right arm (if on right side of basket), jump off left foot, push ball towards the square on the backboard
Task: Students will be in two separate lines; one will be on the right side of the goal while the other will be on the left. Students will be working together as a group and will each have their own basketballs. To start the student at the front of the right line will run up to the goal and perform a layup. Once the student does this, they will get their own rebound and go to the back of the opposite line that they shot from. Once the student is out of the way the first student from the line on the left will perform their layup. So, each line will alternate who performs the layup.
Station 5: Dribbling
Cues: Athletic position, eyes up, push arm towards ground, use finger pads to control the ball
Task: Students will again have their own individual basketballs and will be dribbling in and out of a set of cones. You can either have one set of cones or two depending on class size. Students will be in a line behind the first cone. The student in the front of the line will begin by dribbling their basketball attempting to go outside the cones all the way until they reach the end. Once they get halfway through the cones the second person will begin dribbling and so on. The students will perform this drill until it is time to rotate stations.
Station 6: Shooting
Cues: Eyes on basket, bend knees, jump, extend elbow, follow through by flicking wrist
Task: For this station the students will have the freedom to shoot anywhere on the court in order to practice their shots. I would set a boundary on the court, so you don’t have students trying to shoot half court shots. Each student will have their own basketballs so that they can get the maximum amount of shots in as possible.
