Lesson Progression

  1. The teacher will begin the lesson by asking students the following questions; ‘Did you know there are five food groups? Can anyone name these groups?’
  2. After allowing students to share their prior knowledge of the topic, the teacher will name each food group and ask students to name possible foods that would be apart of that particular food group. For example, ask students ‘do you know what foods you would find in the fruit group?’ Students would name things such as strawberries, oranges, etc.
  3. The teacher will continue this discussion with the grains, vegetables, dairy, and protein groups.
  4. Next, the teacher will hold up a few food cards and have students name the food group it belongs to. (The teacher should have a couple of cards from all five food groups.)
  5. It should be made clear that eating foods from all five groups is important and will help you grow, and give you the energy to do all things.
  6.  The teacher will section off the room using posters for the five groups. The teacher will call out a food and students will do an exercise to the food group poster it belongs to. For example, the teacher might say Skip to the food group that bread belongs to.’ The students would skip to the grains poster in the room. (Exercises may include running, walking, skipping, high knees, dancing, etc.)

Assessments

The students will be assessed through the questioning that takes place during the lesson. The students will also be assessed through observations during the activity portion of the lesson. The teacher will observe who is able to do the exercise to the correct food group.
