Newberry County was founded in 1785 within the Ninety-Six District. Scotch-Irish, English, and German immigrants settled the area beginning in the mid-18th century. In fact, the area became so heavily populated by German immigrants that many residents began to refer to Newberry County as Dutch Fork.

Initially, the county was mostly comprised of small farms. However, these soon gave way to large cotton farms. The cotton growing business in Newberry County continued to expand in the 19th century after the construction of the county’s first railroad. Newberry serves as the county seat.
