Sgt. William Jasper (1750-1779) came to Philadelphia from Germany in 1767, working briefly as an indentured servant before moving to the South and becoming involved as a leader in the Revolutionary War. At the Battle of Fort Moultrie, he rescued the state flag, held it up on a temporary staff, and was honored for his bravery. Jasper died three years later at the Battle of Savannah.
