Thomas Williams, Cane Maker | Original SC

Kaltura

Fourth-generation cane maker Thomas Williams of McClellanville, South Carolina, sells Gullah inspired walking sticks. These hand-carved Cypress knees, Cypress lamps, Cypress tables, walking canes and walking staffs are sold at his stand on Pawleys Island.

Thomas' father started carving in the late 1930s. The craft was handed down to Thomas' older brother, CeCe Williams, and finally to Thomas who has been carving for over 28 years. The canes and staffs are made from single pieces of oak, cherry, dogwood, and Hickory wood.

Williams sells his canes and other carved pieces at his stand on Pawleys Island where he has been selling his one of a kind work for more than two decades. There he is known as the "Cane Man".
