Francis Marion served in the American Revolutionary War. Known as the Swamp Fox, he is considered one of the fathers of modern guerrilla warfare due to his "surprise attack" strategies that often took place in the Pee Dee area.
Francis Marion was born in Berkeley County, but has several landmarks named after him including Francis Marion University which is located in Florence County.
