By the turn of the century, Florence was prospering. The train yard was active, and a new crop, tobacco, bolstered the economy. Florence became known as the Magic City.

Learn how the Florence Museum was created along with many other historical buildings.

Some famous people from Florence include, William Henry Johnson, an African American painter and FBI agent Melvin Purvis, a native of Timmonsville.

After surviving the Great Depression in the 1930s, Florence's tranquility was shattered by news of the Japanese attack in 1941. In support of World War II, there was considerable volunteering in Florence. The rationing was accepted and supported by Florentines as one of the necessities of the home front during the war.
