What Happened to the Congaree Indians, and Learning from Native American Artifacts, Culture, Foodways and Creation Stories

Ms. Pam Corwin, a biologist for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources shared stories of the southeastern Native Americans, including the extinct tribe of the Congaree. Those remaining of the Congaree Tribe after the smallpox epidemic and the Yemassee War joined the Catawba tribe. Ms. Corwin shared beautiful headdresses, bead work, and a drum; items that she and her father crafted. Her family has donated the majority of their Native American artifacts to the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C.
