The Star Fire Engine Company | History of SC Slide Collection

Fire companies were usually volunteer associations, and separate African-American and white companies developed in most sizeable towns in the state after the Civil War. The Star Fire Engine Company, housed on King Street, was one of two African-American engine companies in Georgetown at the beginning of the 20th century. Two of its members proudly display their pump engine. From the Morgan Photograph Collection.
