Slave Cabin | History of SC Slide Collection

The board and batten siding on this slave cabin on the Arundel Plantation in Georgetown County was promoted as an efficient form of house construction from 1850 onward, and is widely seen in structures that survive from that time period. The siding helps the water run off more effectively and is therefore longer lasting than earlier forms of wooden vernacular construction techniques.
