
General Thomas Sumter was an American Revolutionary War militia leader and later a U.S. Congressman.
After the crushing defeat at Waxhaws, General Sumter gathered militia troops in South Carolina. Militia units consisted of “civilian” farmers and sometimes included Catawba Indians and slaves.
