Engage-
Ask students what do animals need in their habitat in order to survive?
Provide them with a range of pictures of water, different “foods”, habitats, etc. and ask them to sort the pictures into things that animals have to have for survival. This should be a review from kindergarten science standard on habitats.
Explore-
Introduce and view clip from Coastal Kingdom classroom about the corn snake. Explain to students they are about to view a habitat of a corn snake. On their white paper as they watch the video they should write or draw each thing they hear that is related to the what this snake needs in it’s habitat.
Explain-
In groups have students compare their observations while watching the video. Create a chart for class and have each group list their observations under plants, food, water, shelter, other.
Ask students do only corn snakes live in this habitat? Challenge them to watch video clip again and identify three more living things in this habitat.
Elaborate-
In another chart for class, explain to students that they are now scientists collecting data about a variety of habitats in South Carolina.
Ask your scientists at each group to come up with a description for their habitat they observed in the video clip. Replay video clip if necessary. Use observations from each group to create description. Next record on your chart all the living things the students identified within this habitat. Explain how all these living things can exist together in this habitat.
Ask students can you organize their observations better? Do they notice any patterns?
Evaluate:
Have each student create their own data collection chart in which they record the description of the habitat along with the plants and animals within the habitat. Explain they will now use this chart to observe another habitat. Take students to playground and have them record their observations of that habitat: description, plants, and animals.
Discuss differences and similarities between their playground and the coastal habitat observed.
