Frogs and Lily Pads
Objectives: TSWBT toss a beanbag using the correct form for the underhand toss
Set-up: Spread 6-10 hula hoops in the middle of the gym with one being in the middle
Equipment: Hula hoops, Bean bags, Gym Space
How to Play: This game focuses on students utilizing the underhand toss. The goal of the game is for the students to toss their bean bags into the hula hoops in order to “sink” the lily pads. Students are trying to sink all the lily pads in the gym before the end of class. Students sink the lily pads by having 3 or more bean bags in a hula hoop.
Students will each have a bean bag to start the game. When the music starts students will begin running around the outside of the basketball court or around the edge of the gym. Make sure all students are running in the same direction. When the music stops the students will stop where they are. The teacher will then say “Swing, Step, Toss” which are the cues for the underhand toss. The students will follow along with the cues as the teacher says them. The students should be aiming for the hula hoop that is closest to them because they have a higher chance of landing their bean bag in the hula hoop. After every student tosses, the teacher will walk around and count the bean bags to see if the students sank any lily pads by landing 3 or more bean bags in the hula hoop. If they did sink a lily pad that round, the teacher will remove the hula hoop from the court. After all the sunken lily pads are removed, the teacher will pick either girls or boys to go retrieve their bean bags from the middle of the gym. The students should retrieve the same bean bag that they tossed. After everyone gets their bean bags the teacher will start another round by starting the music.
Cues for underhand toss:
- Swing
- Step
- Toss
Variations:
- Instead of students running around the track they can skip, gallop, or hop
- Overhand throw instead of underhand toss
