Today, a private board of trustees runs the SC State Fair. Walter Edgar recalls his younger years, and remembers the “girly shows” at the SC State Fair, which discontinued around 1975. The last of the “freak shows” also disbanded around the mid 1980’s. Beer concessions were also discontinued, to cut down on public disturbances. The famous rocket in the fairgrounds was erected in 1969. It sat in storage for six years before it was finally put up, and today, it remains a staple of South Carolina fair-goers.
