What is Natural? | A Natural State - Episode 2

Kaltura

The natural world pervades nearly every aspect of the Catawba pottery tradition. Nature-inspired motifs include the turtle, frog, black snake, snail, feather and palm leaf, and are often connected to characters or themes in traditional stories. Clay dug from ancestral pits is a natural resource inextricably tied to the aesthetic of Catawba pottery. The search for clay, the gathering of wood for fire pit, and pottery tools and techniques are all influenced by the tribe’s sensitivity toward natural resources around them.
