Charles Bolden, who grew up in Columbia, served as pilot on the Shuttle Columbia in January 1986. Ron McNair of Lake City, S.C. lost his life in the Shuttle Challenger explosion on January 28, 1986. South Carolina's youngest astronaut, Frank Culbertson, grew up in Holly Hill, S.C.
