How do you define nature when its definition has changed through the centuries? The definition and idea of "art," "nature"and "natural" are difficult terms to pin down. Technology and our evolving awareness of the complexities of the universe ask us to constantly reexamine our roles in the "natural" world.

A Natural State asked all of its contributors to define the term "natural." Francis Chamberlain, a professor of landscape architecture at Clemson, offers a thought provoking answer.
