Jazz legend John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie, was born in Cheraw, South Carolina. Dizzy Gillespie, Cheraw's claim to fame, filled many musical roles, such as trumpeter, bandleader, composer, and singer. Gillespie is also known for being at the forefront of the new music genre known as “bebop.”

Dizzy comes back to visit Cheraw on a regular basis. During his visit to Cheraw, Mayor Jackson decided to get Dizzy together with some of his old music buddies whom he played music with back in the 1930s.
