A Closer Look

Danielle Howle has been called "a southern storyteller with a gorgeous sense of melody." She tells stories through her songs. Like poetry, songs often leave out more than they put in. The melody of a song adds to the meaning of the story that it tells. Listen to the music. What feeling does it bring to the story of this song? Listen to the words. Can you write the story she is telling?

About the Musician

In this clip Danielle Howle is playing in Finlay Park in Columbia, South Carolina. She is a songwriter and singer who accompanies herself on the guitar. Her music combines a country feel with indie rock experimental sounds. Danielle has released records with various labels, including Kill Rock Stars, Daemon Records, Sub Pop and Simple Machines.

About the Artist

A resident of Columbia, South Carolina, Danielle Howle made her recording debut in 1993 as the frontwoman for the group Lay Quiet Awhile on the album Delicate Wire. She has toured with Ani Di Franco, Hootie and the Blowfish and The Indigo Girls. She says that, "Bad things are always outweighed by the birth of a song or moment that comes from somewhere unknown inside and materializes through music."
