• Underground stem
• Roots and inner bark of stem are yellow
• Roots produce a strong odor and taste bitter
• Opposite, lobed leaves with saw-toothed edges are deciduous
• Produces tiny flowers
• Fruit is small, dry, one-seeded pod that grows in drooping cluster
• Lives on shady streambanks and damp woods at low elevations
