Flowering Dogwood | The Cove Forest

(Cornus florida)

This small understory tree of forests is also widely planted in residential areas. In spring, clusters of small greenish flowers surrounded by four large white petal-like bracts are produced. The flowers develop into brigh red berries in teh fall. The berries are an important food source for a variety of wildlife, especially birds. Unfortunately, Flowering Dogwoods are becoming much less commmong due to a parasistic fungus know as anthranose.
