Dreamcatcher | Periscope

We saw many Native American crafts at the powwow. Jewelry, clothing, and crafts such as "dreamcatchers" were popular items.

The origin of the dreamcatcher is hard to determine. Different tribes explain them in different ways, or may not be aware of their origins. Some now believe the tradition began with the Ojibwe of Canada and the northern United States.

A dreamcatcher is a web of string or fiber on a wooden hoop, with beads, feathers, and other ornaments woven in. A popular story is that they were placed above a baby's cradle to catch evil spirits or bad dreams, much like a spider catches bugs in a web.
