Dance | Periscope

One of the most important parts of a powwow is dancing. Dancers in fancy costumes perform steps to songs of the drum circle. Sometimes different tribes, or Indian Nations, dance together. This is called an intertribal dance. Most powwows begin with an intertribal dance to celebrate the joining of different Indian Nations for one event.

At the Powwow we visited, dancers also competed for prizes and money. Costumes, moves and rhythm are judged in the competition. And most importantly, a dancer must make sure to stop on the last beat of the drum!
