The Charleston Orphan House | History of SC Slide Collection

The Charleston Orphan House was founded in the late 18th century, but the main building pictured here was constructed between 1853 and 1855. The city abandoned the building in 1948 in favor of less imposing and more home-like suburban cottages for homeless children.
