Volleyball: Setting
Task 1: Shadow Set
For this task, students will be in their own personal space (At least 6 feet apart) around the gym floor. Students will be practicing the setting action without a ball in self space. The teacher will move around the gym giving feedback to the students based on the cues below.
Cues:
1.Knees bent
2.Look through the hole- Hands will be above your head and you will be looking through the opening between your hands
3.Spider fingers- Contact the ball with the finger pads on both hands. Do not contact ball with the palms
4.Snap and get tall- Snap the ball out of your hands with the finger pads while extending arms and legs.
Task 2: Self toss, set, and catch
Again, for this task, each student will be in their own personal space scattered around the gym but each student will have their own ball for this task. On the teacher's signal the students will toss the ball above their head, set the ball up in the air, and catch it as it comes down. Students will continue this process until the teacher's signal. Students may use different balls such as balloons, beach balls, trainer balls, or regular volleyballs.
Extension: Have students that are performing well to perform multiple sets before they catch the ball
Application: See how many sets that the students can make in a row without the ball touching the ground. For safety remind the students to set the ball straight up and try to not run around in order to set the ball.
Task 3: Partner toss, set, and catch
For this task, students will be in partners with one ball per 2 students. Students will stand about 10 feet apart. One student will toss the ball underhand to their partner who will set the ball back to the tosser who will catch the set. Have the students perform this 5 times and then switch roles.
Extension: if students are controlling the ball well have the students do multiple sets to themselves before, they set it back to their partner
Task 4: Partner toss, set, and catch with movement
Students will again be in partners from the previous task with the same volleyball. The tosser will toss the ball underhand to their partner but instead of tossing it straight to them, they will toss it to either side of the student. This will force the hitter to shuffle to either side in order to set the ball back to the tosser. Once they set the ball back to their partner the tosser will catch the volleyball. Do these 5 times each and then switch roles.
Extension:
- Have students increase the distance that the tossers toss the ball away from the hitter
- Have students see how many sets they can make in a row
Task 5: Set only game
For this game, students will be in groups of 4 and will be playing 2V2. Students will be playing each other in a modified court (Split the normal volleyball court in half). The teams will be on both sides of the net (one on one side and the other on the other side). One player will start with the volleyball and will self-toss it to themselves and set it over the net. The other team will return the ball using only the set motion. Students will continue rallying the ball. In order to get a point, the teams will have to set it to each other 2 or 3 times before they set it over the net to the other team. If they do so successfully, they get 1 point. Teams cannot hit the ball more than 3 times before passing the ball over the net. There are no points awarded for forcing an error or only using one set per team.
Rules:
- Play begins with a self-toss
- No more than three sets are allowed before returning the ball
- One point is earned each time the ball is set over with 3 or fewer sets
