Lesson Progression

Volleyball: Forearm Pass

Prerequisite Skills:
Basic understanding of volleyball rules and procedures
Basic knowledge of serving, forehand pass, and overhead pass
Knowledge of all safety rules (no running or slamming equipment)
Basic understanding of working cooperatively and quietly with a group
Basic understanding of offensive/defensive strategies

Equipment Needed:
Volleyballs
Standards
Nets

Cues: athletic position, thumbs parallel, arms straight, bent knees, shoulders square

Objectives:

Psychomotor: TSWBT correctly perform a forearm pass (athletic position, thumbs parallel, arms straight, bent knees, shoulders square) in an activity by the end of the lesson.

Cognitive: TSWBT identify the cues for a forearm pass (athletic position, thumbs parallel, arms straight, bent knees, shoulders square) when asked by the teacher during/at the end of the lesson

Affective: TSWBT work productively (follows classroom rules, cooperates with partner/groups, handles equipment properly) and safely (doesn’t hit balls out of control, stays within court) with the equipment throughout the lesson.

Task 1: Students will be in partners tossing the ball to their partner where they will perform a forearm pass back to the tosser. Students will hit 5 in a row and then reverse roles so that both students each get 5 forearm passes.

Refinement- Remind students to keep their arms straight so that they can control where they hit the volleyball

Upward Extension- If the task is too easy for some students recommend them to toss the ball side to side in order to have the hitter move a little bit

Downward Extension- If students are having a hard time hitting the ball back to their partner have them each take a step forward to shorten the distance.

Application- See how many times the students can hit it to their partner without making them move to catch the volleyball.

Task 2: For this task, students will be with the same partners as before. This time the students will be bumping or passing the volleyball using their forearms back and forth to each other. The tosser will toss the ball to their partner and begin passing back and forth using the bumping technique.

Refinement: Make sure that the students are not hitting the ball straight to their partner. There needs to be some arch on the passes

Extension: If the students are performing this task with ease have them start challenging each other by hitting it side to side

Application: Have a competition with the whole class to see which partners can pass the ball back and forth the most times without the ball hitting the ground.

Task 3: This task will be a fun activity for students and will focus on the forearm pass. Students will be in groups of 5-6 and will be spaced out in a circular formation. There will be one volleyball per group. One student will start with the ball and toss it to anyone in the group except for the two students on either side of them. Once they toss the ball the person that they tossed it to will bump it to another student in the group. The goal of the game is to bump the ball to each person in the circle without the volleyball hitting the ground. If you have an advanced group, tell the students that each student must hit it at least one time before the next person can hit it twice. Be sure to explain to the students the importance of calling the ball by yelling “ball, ball, ball” or “mine, mine, mine”.

Refinement: Make sure that the students are hitting high passes so that it gives their teammates enough time to get under the ball. This will most likely be the most difficult part of the game.

Application: See how many times your team can pass the ball to each other without the volleyball hitting the ground!
