Lesson Progression
- Bellringer - Students will brainstorm either individually or as partners about how many different ways goods are transported into and throughout the country. What careers are associated with the transportation of goods? Students will list all of their answers on the document “Logistics Brainstorming Activity.” (found in the resources tab). This can be done digitally, printed, or whole-group and writing their responses on large chart paper. The students will share their answers by both submitting their responses digitally and orally. The students need to justify their answers when sharing aloud.
- The teacher will introduce the lesson by discussing what logistics means and the importance of logistics for the economy. The teacher will introduce the next activity by reading the overview of the video, “Thomas Jones, Import Team Leader | Let's Go! CAREERS” located https://www.knowitall.org/video/thomas-jones-import-team-leader-lets-go-careers. The teacher will share the document, “Thomas Jones, Import Team Leader Learning Activity” (located in the Resources tab) with the students (this can be done digitally or printed). The teacher will review the activity so the students know what to expect when watching the video. The students will complete that activity and submit to the teacher. The teacher will use “Thomas Jones, Import Team Leader Learning Activity Answer Key” (located in the Resources Tab) to check for understanding and provide feedback to the students. The teacher should discuss the answers and video with the class (the discussion should relate back to the essential question).
- The teacher will introduce the next activity by telling the students that this will focus on another aspect of logistics, moving throughout the country. The teacher will introduce the next activity by reading the overview of the video, “Lola Salas, Truck Driver | Let's Go! CAREERS” found https://www.knowitall.org/video/lola-salas-truck-driver-lets-go-careers. The teacher will share the document, “Lola Salas, Truck Driver Learning Activity” (located in the Resources tab) with the students (this can be done digitally or printed). The teacher will review the activity so the students know what to expect when watching the video. The students will complete that activity and submit to the teacher. The teacher will use “Lola Salas, Truck Driver Learning Activity Answer Key” (located in the Resources Tab) to check for understanding and provide feedback to the students. The teacher should discuss the answers and video with the class (the discussion should relate back to the essential question).
- Culminating Activity - The students are to choose a good or resource and discuss how it makes it way to the consumer. The students must research the good and create a presentation or essay about where the good/resource originates, how it is transported, and where it is sold. The presentation must include accurate and correct information from reputable sources. The students can create this presentation using digital software as Powerpoint or Google Slides depending on your school’s digital software or the students can write an essay manually. Share the document, “How Goods Are Transported” (located in the Assessment tab) with the class digitally, if possible (if not, you can print out this document and distribute it manually), so the students know their expectations. The teacher needs to use the document, “How Goods Are Transported Teacher’s Edition” (located in the Assessment tab) to assess the students’ presentations and provide feedback.
Teacher Notes
If you are using a cloud file storage system (Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or iCloud), I would recommend having the students create a digital folder for this lesson to save their notes and student work. It will help with the organization.
