Students will explore real-world scenarios related to spring gardens to differentiate between situations requiring area or perimeter calculations.

Note: Two different options of the same performance task are linked in the resources tab. One is a simple categorizing worksheet, while the other is a sort that requires cutting and gluing (scissors and glue needed).

Lesson Progression

(1) Introduction (10 minutes):

Begin by discussing spring gardens and their shapes and sizes. Optional: Use the link in the resources tab to share some SC Gardens with students.
Review the definitions of area (the space inside a shape) and perimeter (the distance around a shape).
Use simple visual examples (e.g., a square garden plot) to illustrate the difference.

(2) Guided Practice (15 minutes):

Present a real-world garden scenario (e.g., "A gardener wants to put a fence around a flower bed.")
Ask students: "Are we finding the area or the perimeter in this situation? Why?"
Discuss the reasoning and connect it to the definitions.
Repeat with another scenario (e.g., "A gardener wants to cover a vegetable patch with mulch.")
Model how to identify key words in the problem that indicate area or perimeter (e.g., "around," "fence" for perimeter; "cover," "inside" for area).

(3) Independent Practice (20 minutes):

Distribute the "Garden Area & Perimeter" worksheet (linked in the resources tab).
Students solve the word problems and explain whether they need to find the area or perimeter.
Encourage them to draw diagrams or use grid paper to visualize the problems.

(4) Wrap-up (10 minutes):

Review the essential questions.
Discuss students' answers and strategies.
Have students create their own garden scenarios and explain whether area or perimeter is needed.

Teacher Notes

differentiation: Provide visual aids and manipulatives (e.g., grid paper, string). Use simpler word problems with smaller numbers. Work in small groups with teacher guidance. Provide sentence starters to aid in explanations.

extension: Introduce irregular shapes and composite figures. Have them create multi-step word problems involving both area and perimeter. Challenge them to design a garden with specific area and perimeter requirements. Introduce unit conversions.
