Soccer (Passing)
Prerequisite Skills:
Basic understanding of soccer rules (no touching with the hands)
Basic understanding of how to pass/trap a soccer ball
Knowledge of all safety rules (no running)
Basic understanding of working cooperatively and quietly with a group
Objectives:
Psychomotor: TSWBT perform a soccer pass (plant foot, contact the middle, instep, follow through, appropriate force) as well as trap (front, heel down, toe up, cushion) the ball while using the cues for each, with a partner in a small sided game at the end of class.
Cognitive: TSWBT state the critical elements/cues for passing (least favorite foot next to ball, contact the middle, instep, follow through) and trapping (front, heel down, toe up, cushion) a soccer ball with a partner when prompted by the teacher during/after class.
Affective: TSWBT work cooperatively and productively (by giving each other high fives and saying good job) with a group of students while performing different passing/trapping drills during the lesson.
Equipment Needed:
2 small cones per student
15-20 soccer balls
26 poly spots
Safety Concerns:
Don’t run through another set of cones if you lose control of the ball
Walk to go get ball
Critical Features/Summary Cues:
Passing:
- Plant foot: Non-kicking foot next to the ball
- Contact middle: Contact ball in the middle
- Instep: Use the inside of the foot
- Follow through: Follow through so your kicking foot goes to your target
- Appropriate force: Use a firm kick so it gets to your target
Trapping (stopping the ball):
- Front: In front of ball
- Heel down, Toe up
- Cushion the ball with bottom of foot
Warm up: Students will get into groups of 3 (may have a group or two with 4) and begin passing and trapping the soccer ball to each other in a circle. Teacher will not give cues for the warmup as it is a way for me to assess where the students are at skill wise. This should take 5-10 minutes as the teacher will walk around looking at each students skill level.
Task 1: Teacher will now introduce the cues for how to pass and trap the soccer ball as well as demonstrating each technique. For this task there will be a set of cones about 5 feet apart and in front of a wall/fence. There will be a poly spot behind them where the students will be kicking the ball from. Students will be grouped in the same groups as the warmup and will be working on kicking the ball from the poly spot towards the set of cones at the wall/fence. The goal of this task is for the students to kick the ball between the set of cones using the correct cues for passing. If the soccer ball rolls back to the students than they can try to trap the ball in order to stop it. Each student will get 5 passes and then rotate to the back of the line.
Intratask: This time the groups can either back up or move forward from the cones to make it easier or harder.
Refinement- Remember that we want the students to use the inside of their foot and not their toes. Using the inside of the foot provides more accuracy on the passes
Task 2: This time students will again be working on passing and trapping but with a partner instead of the wall. Each partner will have two sets of cones in front of them about 3-5 feet apart. For this task students will be trying to pass the ball in between their partners cones while the partner receiving the ball will be working on trapping the ball. Once they receive the ball then they will pass it back to their partner between their cones.
Intratask- Again the partners can either move the cones forwards or backwards depending on what they feel that they can perform better and more accurate. (if students are struggling do not let them move the cones backwards).
Refinement: Kicking ball with enough force so that it gets to partner in a timely manner. Let the students know that the more they open their hips the easier it will be to contact the ball with the inside of the foot.
Closure: Praise the students for working hard and practicing each skill. Ask students to name the part of the foot that they should be passing with (inside). Get the students thinking about how hard they should pass the soccer ball to their partners when they’re close and far. Ask students to get together with their partner from the 2nd task and have one partner tell the other student the cues for passing while the other partner will state the cues for trapping the soccer ball.
