Lesson Progression

  1. The teacher will begin the lesson by asking the students what comes to mind when they hear the word ‘senses.’
  2. Day 1: Teacher will write down students’ responses on the board.
  3. The teacher will go over PowerPoint with the students.
  4. After the teacher goes over the PowerPoint, and the students are familiar with what the five senses are, the teacher will introduce the activities for each sense that will be done over the course of the week.
  5. Day 2: Teacher will start with sight. The teacher will review this sense with the class. Once they have reviewed, the teacher will pass out student’s notebooks and pencils. The teacher will take the students outside and have them look up at the clouds. Students should discuss what they think certain clouds look like, and should write down what they see in their notebooks. They should also try and sketch a drawing of what the cloud looks like.
  6. Once the students are back in the classroom, the teacher will have students share what they saw, and write their responses on the board.
  7. Day 3: Teacher will review touch and taste. Once they have reviewed, the teacher will pass out the student’s notebooks and pencils. The teacher will have four brown bags. One bag with a wooden block, one with an eraser, one with a ziplock bag, and the other with Play-Doh. The teacher will have each student feel what is inside the bags, and write down what they think in their journals.
  8. Once each student has had a chance to touch the items, the teacher will have the students share what they think they felt in each bag, and write their responses on the board.
  9. After this, the teacher will have pretzels, goldfish and potato chips (plain). Each student will be blindfolded, and taste each item. After each item, they will write down in their journals what they tasted.
  10. Once each student has had a chance to taste the items, the teacher will have the students share what they think they tasted, and write their responses on the board.
  11. Day 4: Teacher will review smell. Once they have reviewed, the teacher will pass out student’s notebooks and pencils. The teacher will take the students outside and have them walk around and think about what they smell. Students should discuss what they are smelling and write it down in their notebooks.
  12. Once the students are back in the classroom, the teacher will have students share what they smelt, and write their responses on the board.
  13. Day 5: Teacher will review hearing. Once they have reviewed, the teacher will pass out student’s notebooks and pencils. The teacher will take the students outside and have them walk around and think about the sounds they hear.  Students should discuss what they are hearing and write it down in their notebooks. (have students think about birds, other people, traffic, etc.)
  14. Once the students are back in the classroom, the teacher will have students share what they heard and write it down in their notebooks.
