Lesson Progression

Pickleball

Prerequisite Skills:
Basic understanding of pickleball rules and procedures
Basic knowledge of serving, forehand, and backhand shots
Knowledge of all safety rules (no running)
Basic understanding of working cooperatively and quietly with a group

Equipment Needed:
5-6 Jump ropes/nets
25-35 Cones or standards for nets
10 polyspots
10-15 Pickleball rackets
Whiffle balls

Objectives:
Psychomotor: TSWBT perform a pickleball serve (stance, aim, swing, contact, follow through), forehand (step, point, contact, follow through), and backhand (step, point, contact, follow-through) while using the cues for each, with a small group in a small-sided game at the end of class.

Cognitive: TSWBT state the critical elements/cues for a serve (stance, aim, swing, contact, follow through), forehand (step, point, contact, follow through), and backhand (step, point, contact, follow-through) with a whiffle ball with a partner/group when prompted by the teacher during/after class.

Affective: TSWBT work productively and safely with different pickleball equipment with a group of students while performing different serving, forehand, and backhand drills during the lesson.

Rules:
Students will follow all school and classroom rules which include:
No running/horseplay
Respect other students
Treat equipment properly

Cues:
Serving- stance, aim, swing, contact, follow-through
Forehand shot- step (opposite foot of swinging hand), point, contact, follow-through
Backhand shot- Step (same foot as swinging hand), point, contact, follow-through

Task 1 (serving to wall): For this task, students will be working on their serves by hitting the ball towards a target on the wall while using the correct cues (Stance, aim, swing, contact, follow-through). For a target, you can use tape to make a square or hang hula hoops on the wall with tape. Students will be working in pairs with the student that is not hitting the ball on the poly spot behind the student hitting. Students will hit 5 balls in a row and then rotate with their partner.

Upward Extension: Try hitting the same spot every time
Downward Extension: Practice contacting the ball in the middle of the paddle by keeping your eyes on the ball and swinging softer

Refinement: Serves must be underhand and the student's foot may not cross the line when serving

Task 2 (forehand shot to partner): For this task students will be practicing their forehand shots by hitting the ball to their partner over a jump rope or net. Students will be in groups of 4 on a court with 2 students on each side. There will be one tosser and one hitter while the other two students are retrieving the balls. The tosser will toss 5 balls to the hitter across the net who will use the forehand technique to return the ball to the opposite side. Once the hitter hits 5 balls the students will switch roles. After the first two students hit their 5 then the two students who had been retrievers will each hit their 5 balls while the other two students become retrievers.

Refinement: Tosses need to be soft and to the dominant side of the hitter

Upward Extension: Have the students try to return the ball to the sides of the court rather than in the middle

Downward Extension: If a student is having a hard time making contact with the ball have them toss the ball to themselves while working on correct technique

Application: Put a hula hoop on the side of the court where the tosser is. Have the hitters see how many out of 5 they can return in the hula hoop.

Task 3 (backhand shot to partner): Students will again be in the same groups of 4 on a court with 2 students on each side. There will be one tosser and one hitter while the others are retrieving the balls. The tosser will toss 5 balls to the hitter who will use the backhand technique to return the ball to the opposite side.

Refinement: This time we want to again make sure the students are softly tossing the balls and aiming the toss towards the non-dominant side of the hitter (opposite side of the racket)

Upward Extension: Have the students try to return the ball to the sides of the court rather than in the middle

Downward Extension: If a student is having a hard time making contact with the ball have them toss the ball to themselves while working on correct technique

Application: Put a hula hoop on the side of the court where the tosser is. Have the hitters see how many out of 5 they can return in the hula hoop
Task 4 (King of the court): This task is called “king of the court”. This game has one player on each side of the court with one person being king and the other being the challenger. The goal of the game is to get the king off the court. In order to do this you must win 2 points in a row. If this is done the challenger becomes the king and another challenger steps in. The two students that are not participating will be retrieving the balls if necessary.

Refinement: One person on either side of the net. If the king is there for more than 3 rotations, then allow someone else to become king.

Application: Try to be the king as long as you can. If you’re a challenger, then knock the king off the hill.
