Pass the Hoop
Objectives: TSWBT work together as a team in order to pass the hoop around the circle using good communication, teamwork, cooperation, and thinking skills.
Equipment: Hula hoops of different sizes, Open space
Set up: Students will gather in a circle and will be holding hands with the students that are beside them to the left and the right. 1 hoop (start with the biggest) will be inserted between two students so that the hoop is hanging on their hands. If you have a larger class, you can split the students up into two or more groups to allow for better participation.
How to play: Students should be holding hands in order to create a circle shape. The “chain” or circle is not allowed to break meaning that students are not allowed to let go of each other’s hands. The hoop will be placed in between two students. The goal of the game is to pass the hoop all the way around the circle back to the original starting point. Students will have to communicate and cooperate with each other in order to move the hoop around the circle.
Rules: If the “chain” breaks the group must start over from the starting point
Variations: There are many different variations that you can use in order to increase or decrease the difficulty of the game. Some ways to make the game easier include allowing the students to talk and using larger hoops. Some ways to make the game more difficult include not allowing the students to talk, using smaller hoops, or you can add multiple hoops within the same circle. If you want to make the game really challenging, you can add multiple hoops of different colors and designate certain colors to certain directions. For example, the red hoop must travel left and the blue hoop must travel right.
